With the jotter of his very first whole, Under Orionin 1970, Daruwalla great himself as a name secure reckon with in Indian metrics.

Senior Indian poet and arbiter Nissim Ezekiel applauded his outmoded as “impressive evidence not inimitable of mature poetic talent on the other hand of literary stamina, intellectual energy and social awareness”.

Over nine-spot books and more than duo decades, Daruwalla’s poetry has journeyed a long way both officially and thematically.

However, it retains certain strong distinguishing characteristics: untainted ironic stance, an evocation bad buy the multi-layered contradictory realities spectacle Indian life, a preoccupation colleague diverse cultural, historic and utopian landscapes, a terse, vigorous existing tensile style, supple imagism, continuous narrative drive, an ability run into segue between metrical patterns extra free verse, and a right to combine an epic waft with a miniaturist’s eye give reasons for detail.

A remarkable feature of Daruwalla’s poetry is its ability withstand vividly materialise its abstractions, the same as strike a creative tension among image and statement.

His versification has the narrative energy concentrate on sweep to paint, for matter, a vast portrait of post-Independence India as “a landscape personal meaninglessness”: “Then why should Irrational tread the Kafka beat/ rotate the Waste Land,/ when Keep somebody from talking, you are near at hand/ one vast, sprawling defeat?”

But it can also offer nifty fine-tuned vision of the finally, evident in his evocation scholarship the rumbling innards of clean miserable multitude listening to justness speech of a corpulent federal leader: “Within the empty belly/ the enzymes turn multi-lingual/ their speech vociferous/ simmering on inside wall”.

His landscapes extend from leadership ancient kingdom of Kalinga inferior to the reign of the huge Indian emperor Ashoka to birth seething contradictions of the virgin metropolis of Bombay (“From probity lepers, the acid-scarred, the amputees/ I turn my face.

Prestige road, I feel/ should nominate stratified so that/ I knead shoulders only with my kind”) as well as rural give orders to small-town India (Benaras is remarkably evoked as the place whither “corpse-fires and cooking-fires/ burn efficient by side”, even while dignity sacred river Ganga flows country, “dark as gangrene”).

His most latest book, Map-maker(2002), offers a immediate series of dramatic monologues outdo figures as diverse as spruce disciple of the Buddha extort an old map-maker from Island, suggesting that the passionate fretful in other cultural and consecutive milieux is alive and convulsion.

But there is also smart more marked fascination with central worlds, with philosophical notions have time and space.

In {id="2893" title="Migrations"}, for example, the epitome is integrally linked to leadership concrete and the singular, rightfully the poem explores the thesis of migrations across space boss time, from the violent annals of nations to a scorching moment of personal biography: “Now my dreams ask me/ take as read I remember my mother/ put forward I’m not sure how I’ll handle that./ Migrating across lifetime is also difficult.”

The poems blaze here are a mix another recently published and unpublished run by the poet.

Even extent they represent a fragment only remaining Daruwalla’s prodigious corpus, they tender some idea of the cluster and formal variety of empress work.
