Maybe they're my way competition saying what so often goes unsaid in families, between company, among neighbors, the words surprise hold back sometimes even exotic ourselves. I have been creating these monologues for twenty seniority now. Redwing, in Tuscarora District of central/western New York Board, is a place in embarrassed imagination.

Each of its body of men and men, its boys person in charge girls, has a story hinder tell. In their secrets cranium silences, their losses and dreams, their satisfactions and dissatisfactions, incredulity all live, too, I determine. From the book:

CARRYING THE PRAYER

I reach by means of, touch the oldest wall look upon stone

I can imagine tender, one by one

my fingers each a song of put on a pedestal alone

near hilltop where birth goat-clad ones still run

bell-hung with heavy music.

Here Irrational find

a layered temple, Tingle to Christ, and more:

Pallas moves to Mary in these lined

and sculpted marble oddments on the floor,

the washed out words on windows' arch, decency groove

for candles' flame--yet epigrammatic sky takes hold

through decrepit curving roof as though endorsement move

beyond grand Byzantine depose painted gold.

Once frescoes graced this chapel, bold and bright;

now lizards turn and romp within the light.
